Little House Living: The Make Your Own Guide to a Frugal, Simple, and Self-Sufficient Life

Shortly after getting married, Merissa Alink and her husband found themselves with nothing in their pantry but a package of spaghetti and some breadcrumbs. Their life had hit rock bottom, and it was only after a touching act of charity that they were able to get on their feet again.

Inspired by this gesture of kindness as well as the beloved Little House on the Prairie books, Merissa found that a life of self-sufficiency and simplicity could be charming and blissful. She set out to live an entirely made-from-scratch life, the “Little House” way, and as a result, she slashed her household budget by nearly half—saving thousands of dollars a year. She started to write about homesteading, homemaking, and cooking from scratch, and over the next few years developed the recipes and DIY projects that would one day become part of her now beloved website, LittleHouseLiving.com.

As whole foods became staples of the family diet, Merissa realized the dangers of putting overly processed ingredients not only into our bodies, but on or near them as well. In addition to countless delicious, home-cooked meals, she developed natural, easy-to-make recipes for everything from sunscreen to taco seasoning mix, lemon poppy hand scrub to furniture polish. With their simple ingredients, these recipes are allergen friendly and many are gluten-free.

With over 130 practical, simple DIY recipes, gorgeous full-color photographs, and Merissa’s trademark charm in personal stories and tips, Little House Living is the epitome of heartland warmth and prairie inspiration.

Great little book

I am a retired person that lives in the city, but still found plenty of ideas to grasp and use in this little book. Loved the glossy pics and the how to's and the recipe ideas made my mind race back to my granny and her granny before her, great recipes. I have already tried the soup ideas and the starter recipes are fabulous. I volunteer at a hospice and I made soup for the nurses there and they loved it, I used my own bread recipe from my granny, but the recipes in the book are much easier than the one that I use and gave me so many ideas. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and ideas, it made me smile and inspired me.

A GEM of a book and her blog is an excellent resource for simple living

I found this book at the library, took it home and almost put a post-it note on almost all the pages--that is when I decided to just buy it. If you crave a simple life, a believer in the FIRE movement (financial independence retire early), or just reduce your consumerism, this book and her blog is a great start. Full of ideas and beautiful pictures. If ever I move to a tiny home and had to whittle down my material things, this book is one that will make it to my personal library. Hoping she writes another book.

EXCELLENT BOOK!

I'm not sorry a bit I bought this book, it not only gave me ideas of my own, but the recipes, and thoughts on simple living throughout the book were very useful, as well as bringing out some of my own ideas that I hadn't given much thought to. I would recommend this book to anyone trying to live a richer life, by taking our kitchens and homes back into our hands instead of giving them over to manufacturers of "food products" rather than real food, that we ourselves could be making. I've had this book about a year now, and never wrote a formal review but pleas know that you will NOT be sorry if you buy this book hoping that it will put more of your life into YOUR hands rather than in those of strangers. It does exactly that!. The book is beautifully done, heavy weight pages, beautiful illustrations and page after page of helpful recipes and encouragement. It would make a beautiful gift to those starting out in their own nests, or those setting up homes. I really can't recommend this book enough.

Little House Living Book Review

I ordered this book as soon as it became available. I have NOT regretted this purchase at all, not for one minute. I neglected to write a review, for which I am so sorry for not having done so, but better late than never, I guess. This little ( actually not little at all, well over 200+ pages) is, without a doubt, one of the handiest books in my kitchen. It covers everything, from Household, Mixes, Meds, etc. When I need ideas, I go to this book. When I need advice, I go to this book. When I need a recipe, I go to this book. You get the idea. This book will get you right out of your comfort zone of preparing the same old thing, and compel you to try a new recipe for lunch or dinner, or even make a household or beauty product instead of going to the drug/grocery store when you are out of something, and you will not be sorry you did so. I love this book, and the best thing is it’s all in glorious color. This is an inexpensive book, but it is NOT written or produced cheaply. Thank you Merissa. Good Job!
